COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Jack Pagliarini tossed 7.2 innings and fanned seven batters, but Maryland rallied in the bottom of the eighth inning to top Northwestern, 4-3, in the series finale Sunday.
Northwestern (8-14, 1-5 B1G) posted eight hits in the contest to Maryland's seven. The Wildcats received production from the top of their lineup with Jack Dunn and Alex Erro each tallying two hits and one RBI. Dunn went 2-for-3 with a double, while Erro extended his hit streak to 14 games.
Maryland (14-14, 2-1 B1G) leaned on Kevin Biondic on Sunday. Biondic went 1-for-4 at the plate with his only hit coming in the bottom of the eighth on a go-ahead two-run home run. He then moved from first base to the mound to get the final out of the contest.
The Terrapins posted two runs in the first inning, but then Pagliarini settled in to retire 15 consecutive batters. Pagliarini finished with 7.2 innings, seven hits, four runs, seven strikeouts and two walks. JR Reimer faced one batter in relief and got a strikeout.
All three of Northwestern's runs came in the top of the third. Leo Kaplan singled to left field top start the frame and stole second. Dunn doubled to right field to score Kaplan and cut into Maryland's lead, 2-1.
Erro singled to right field in the next at-bat to score Dunn from second and tie the game at 2-2. Willie Bourbon singled to center field later in the inning and the ball got by Maryland's center fielder, allowing Erro to score from first base.
Northwestern loaded the bases in the top of the ninth and Connor Lind ripped a ball to left field, but Maryland's Will Watson made a diving play to give Maryland a 4-3 win.
The Wildcats return to action on Tuesday, April 3, to host UIC at Miller Park. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. CT.
