No. 12 ’Cats Win Thriller at No. 23 Johns Hopkins, 11-10

3/30/2018 5:11:00 PM | Women's Lacrosse

BALTIMORE, Md. — Redshirt first-year Julie Krupnick made a season-high 14 saves, including one with 35 seconds remaining, and the 12th-ranked Northwestern lacrosse program closed the game on a 4-0 run to pick up a Big Ten road victory at No. 23 Johns Hopkins Friday afternoon, 11-10.

The Wildcats (8-3, 2-0 Big Ten) faced their largest deficit of the game with 13:50 remaining, 10-7, before going on the 4-0 run to close the game. Senior Sheila Nesselbush found sophomore Megan Kinna in front of the crease at the 13:04 mark and senior Shelby Fredericks assisted on a Nesselbush goal just 13 seconds later to cut the deficit to one, 10-9.

Senior Danita Stroup tied the game with 8:02 left in the game when she fired a shot just before the shot clock expired. Fredericks assisted on the tying goal.

The 'Cats took their first and only lead of the game with 2:22 left on Nesselbush's third goal of the contest. The senior finished with three goals and an assist and is now just one point away from becoming the 20th player since 2002 to reach 100 career points. She has tallied 10 points in two games this week and now has 23 points over her last six contests. In addition to her four points, Nesselbush recorded four draw controls to move past Sarah Albrecht for 10th in program history with 133.

Northwestern retained possession after Nesselbush's go-ahead goal, but an errant pass across the middle gave the Blue Jays (7-5, 0-3 Big Ten) one last chance. MacKenzie Heidberg scored four goals in the contest and looked to make it five, but her point-blank shot was eye high and Krupnick sealed the victory with a save.

Krupnick's 14 saves tied the second-most in a game in program history and are the most since Morgan Lathrop made 14 stops versus Maryland on April 16, 2007. She has now made double-digit saves in back-to-back contests for the first time in her career and has accomplished the feat in three of her last four games.

The Blue Jays jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in Friday's contest as the 'Cats offense sought its rhythm. First year Jill Girardi and junior Holly Korn responded with back-to-back goals to tie the game, but JHU went on another 3-0 run to reclaim the lead. Chicago's Big Ten Team closed the first half with a pair of goals by senior Nicole Beardsley and Girardi, but trailed at the half, 5-4.

Korn scored a pair of second half goals to notch her first career hat trick, the second of which cut a two-goal deficit to one with 18:18 remaining, 8-7. She has tallied three points in each of her last three games.

Fredericks led the way with six draw controls and dished out a a game-high three assists, moving past Sarah Albrecht for sixth in program history with 72 career assists. Sophomore Lindsey McKone picked up a career-high four ground balls to lead all players.

The Wildcats continue their two-game road trip with a matchup versus No. 6 Penn in Philadelphia on Sunday at 11 a.m. CT.
