Spring Break Sweep: ’Cats Take Down No. 6 Penn in Overtime, 12-11

4/1/2018 3:09:00 PM | Women's Lacrosse

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — Junior Selena Lasota scored a season-high five goals, including the game winner in double overtime, to lead 12th-ranked Northwestern to a signature win at No. 6 Penn Sunday afternoon, 12-11.

The win is the Wildcats' third in seven days and extended their winning streak to four as they improved to 9-3 overall. The Quakers fell to 8-2.

The Wildcats twice led by five goals during the second half, including an 11-6 advantage on senior Danita Stroup's goal with 14:31 left in the second half. The Quakers held NU scoreless from that point on in regulation however, closing with a 5-0 run to send the game to overtime.

After neither team was able to score on a possession in the first overtime, senior Shelby Fredericks won the ensuing draw control and the 'Cats went on attack. Senior Sheila Nesselbush took a shot that was saved, but was able to come up with a ground ball to secure possession leading to Lasota's game winning goal. The junior drove to the middle of the field from the left side of the fan, spun back left and twizzlered a bounced shot past the Penn keeper for the victory.

Lasota scored three goals and had an assist in the first half alone to help the Wildcats build an 8-3 advantage at the break. After the two teams exchanged goals in the first nine minutes, sophomore Megan Kinna scored at the 20:08 mark of the first half to give the 'Cats a lead they never relinquished.

Stroup fired a rocket from the left side of the fan to push the lead to two, 4-2, and Lasota sandwiched a pair of goals around a tally from Fredericks to push the lead to five, 7-2. Nesselbush capped the first half run with her first and only game of the contest, becoming the 20th NU player since 2002 to reach 100 career points in the process.

Nesselbush has scored 25 points over her last seven games to reach the milestone.

Penn closed the first half with a 3-0 run of its own, scoring with just four seconds left before the break to cut the lead to 8-3.

Redshirt first year goalkeeper Julie Krupnick took over early in the second half to help the Wildcats build their lead back up, holding the Quakers scoreless for 12:39 while making six saves. Lasota scored her fourth of the game and junior Claire Quinn scored on an assist from sophomore Lindsey McKone during the stretch to build the 'Cats' lead to 10-5.

Krupnick finished the game with 12 saves, marking her third-straight contest in double digits. The Mountain Lakes, New Jersey, native made 38 saves in three wins over No. 11 Syracuse, No. 23 Johns Hopkins and No. 6 Penn this week.

In addition to Krupnicks stellar day, the defense was led by senior Lindsay Darrell's three caused turnovers. First years Ally Palermo and Megan Gordon each had a pair and senior Ally Mueller had one. Mueller led all players with a career-high six ground balls, while Darrell matched her career high with five ground balls.

The Wildcats are back in action next Friday when they host Ohio State at Lanny and Sharon Martin Stadium. Opening draw is scheduled for 7 p.m.
