#B1GCats Set for Big Ten Match Play

EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern tees off their spring campaign at the Big Ten Match Play Championship, Feb. 9-10, at the Hammock Beach Resort in Palm Coast, Florida.
The Wildcats are the defending champions and have won the event a league-best four times.

The #B1GCats captured three-straight crowns from 2010-12 and a runner-up finish in 2016 before reclaiming the title last year. NU defeated Penn State in the championship match, 3.5-2.5, clinched by an Everton Hawkins 35-foot putt on the 18th hole. Hawkins went undefeated in three matches in the event.
"It's always nice to be the defending champions, coming back to a familiar place," said head coach David Inglis. "It helps with this event being the kick-off to the spring season as well. The guys are all ready and really excited to get out there."
The Big Ten Network will broadcast the event at 3:30 p.m. CT on Saturday, March 3.
Northwestern comes into the event ranked second in the Big Ten West and top-50 in the nation according to Golfstat.
The championship format features the Big Ten East and West divisions playing round-robin competition in the preliminary rounds, with the East and West winners facing each other in the Championship round.
The No. 2 Wildcats will take on No. 7 Nebraska, No. 6 Wisconsin, and No. 1 Illinois in the first three rounds.
The event was created as a chance for the Big Ten schools to compete in an early-season competition in warm weather, before the regular stroke play season.
With the NCAA Championship format now changed to match play for the final eight teams, it has become a valuable opportunity for head-to-head experience before the year's ultimate event.
The Hammock Beach Resort Conservatory Course was designed by Tom Watson and is the longest and most-challenging course in the state of Florida.
This breathtaking course is highlighted by waterfalls, babbling brooks and veneered field stone work. With a nod to his affinity for British links-style golf, Watson also added three sod-faced bunkers to the 140 sand and coquina bunkers.
The Conservatory Course was ranked third on Golf Digest's elite list of America's Best New Public Courses in 2008. The Conservatory Course includes nearly 76 acres of man-made lakes and three waterfall features.
