EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. — No. 17 Northwestern (11-4, 5-4 Big Ten) wrapped up its monumental 2017-18 dual slate with a resounding, 36-10, victory over SIUE (6-15, 4-3 SoCon) at the Vadalabene Center on Sunday afternoon.
The Wildcats finished their dual slate with a .733 winning percentage, tying their best mark since posting a .733 finish in the 2011-12 slate.
NU's three pins tied its season-high, also done against Maryland on December 2, 2017, en route to eight individual wins overall.
Northwestern came out of the gate with three-straight wins, including heaps of bonus points from No. 5 Ryan Deakin (149) and Shayne Oster (157).
Alec McKenna (141) started the afternoon off with a clean, 5-0 decision over Dakota Leach to hand the Wildcats three team points.
Deakin followed up with a first-period pin, his team-best eighth win by fall of the campaign. He wrapped up his dual mark at 14-1, with his only setback coming to #2 Brandon Sorensen (Iowa) in a controversial, overtime decision.
Oster continued his scorching-hot wrestling with a 16-0 tech fall of Karsten Van Velsor. Oster stretched his winning streak to three-straight, a stretch that started with a match-clinching pin of Griffin Parriott against No. 22 Purdue last Friday.
Before the intermission, No. 20 Johnny Sebastian (174) notched a shutout, 8-0 major decision over Bryce Shewan to extend the Wildcat lead to 14 points heading into the break.
Mitch Sliga (184) notched his second pin of the season — and Northwestern's second of the afternoon — with a win by fall in 4:17 over SIUE's Jake Godinez.
The Wildcats received another pin from Zack Chakonis (197), a 6:51 winner. Chakonis's fourth pin of the season tied him for second-most on the squad.
Conan Jennings (285) showcased some late dramatics in his heavyweight bout, accumulating all of his scoring in the final period. He topped SIUE's Tommy Helton, 3-0.
In Northwestern's final bout of the afternoon, Colin Valdiviez (133) needed a come-from-behind finish to earn the victory. He did, notching a late-time takedown to put down John Muldoon, 4-2.
Chicago's Big Ten Team is back in action for the Big Ten Championships in East Lansing, Michigan, from March 3-4.
