Seven 'Cats Compete in December Tournaments

EVANSTON, Ill. – As the Northwestern fencing team awaits its next duals meet in January, several Wildcats participated in individual tournaments this weekend domestically and abroad.
First-year Alyssa Chen finished ninth overall at the December North American Cup tournament held in Cincinnati, Ohio on Saturday. The San Diego native went 6-0 in pool play before going 2-1 in direct elimination, including a victory over teammate Amy Jia.
Jia placed 55th at the event after going 3-3 in pools and 1-1 in direct elimination.
Across the globe, Julia Falinska continued her impressive first season. The Warsaw, Poland native competed in the Junior World Cup event in Burgos, Spain on Saturday, where she placed 33rd overall. Falinska posted a perfect 6-0 record in pool play before going 1-1 in direct elimination.
Four more Wildcats competed in the North American Cup on Monday. In epée competition, Emma Scala placed 68th overall after going 4-2 in pools and dropping her lone direct elimination bout. Fellow first-years Natalie Kim and Ananya Gupta finished 114th and 123rd, respectively.
Sophomore Alexis Browne competed for saber, placing 68th overall.

Chicago's Big Ten Team returns to action with the USA Fencing NAC individual event on January 4th through 7th. Northwestern's next duals meet will be the Western Invitational in Colorado Springs, Colo. on January 13th.
