Taylor's Hot Shooting Leads NU to 67-61 Win Over Georgia Tech

EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern (6-1, 0-0 Big Ten) earned conference bragging rights with a victory over Georgia Tech (4-2, 0-0 ACC) Wednesday evening in the B1G/ACC Challenge. The Wildcats were buoyed by a once-again stifling defense, holding their opponent to under 40 percent shooting for the third time this season and winning by a final score of 67-61.

Ryan Taylor led a trio of double-digit scorers for Chicago's Big Ten Team, finishing with 20 points and four made three-pointers. Dererk Pardon notched his third double-double of the year with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Vic Law added 14 points and nine boards.

The hosts got off to a quick start, with a basket-and-one from Pardon giving NU an 8-2 lead after two and a half minutes played. A pair of assists from Anthony Gaines in his first two minutes off the bench helped stretch the advantage to 15-5 with 12:42 to play in the half.

Five points from Vic Law and a three-point-play from Gaines ensured Northwestern continued its dominant opening frame, with the score reading 23-11 at the seven-minute mark.

Law added a tip-in shortly after to reach 10 points in the contest, expanding his streak to seven-straight double-digit scoring performances to start the campaign. A three from Ryan Taylor on the next possession forced Georgia Tech to call a timeout, as the visitors trailed by 19 with 5:27 in the period.

With under three seconds on the clock, NU called a timeout with the ball and a chance to add to its lead. Gaines caught the inbounds pass and drilled a three-pointer at the buzzer to give the 'Cats a 40-20 advantage.

The Yellow Jackets shot just 25 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes, making it the second-lowest total for an NU opponent in a half this season. It also marked the fifth time this year that Northwestern has held an opposing team to less than 25 points in a half.

Chicago's Big Ten Team continued to keep the visitors at arm's length as the second half progressed. Another three from Taylor gave NU its largest lead of the night, 52-26, just over five minutes in. After a brief run by Georgia Tech, a dunk off an offensive rebound from Pardon brought the lead back to 16 for the 'Cats with 8:35 left in the game.

With 4:25 on the clock, the Yellow Jackets had cut the lead down to 10 points, but the Wildcat defense tightened up and held them scoreless over the next two-plus minutes. A jumper from Law with 45 seconds to play put the result beyond any remaining doubt.

The victory gives Northwestern the edge in the all-time series between the programs, as it has now won three of five. All five have come in the Challenge, including in three of the past five seasons.

Next up for NU is a trip to Indiana to open the Big Ten conference slate. The 'Cats will face the Hoosiers on Saturday, Nov. 1, with tip time set for noon CT.
