Wildcats Wrap Up Strong Showing at Remenyik Open

10/21/2018 9:10:00 PM | Women's Fencing

EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern fencing team wrapped up an impressive showing at the 41st Remenyik Open over the weekend. It was the first fencing event held on campus in three years and first in Ryan Fieldhouse. Northwestern competed in women's epee, foil and saber in both Junior and Div I-A events.

Each event featured rounds of pool with six or seven fencers per group in a round robin, followed by a direct elimination round featuring longer bouts up to 15 touches.

On Saturday, eleven Wildcats placed in the top ten of their events, including five first year fencers. Sophomore Alexis Browne finished 7-0 in the Junior Saber pool but was defeated by her teammate, first year Abigail Swallow in the first round of elimination. Swallow went on to the finals of the event and placed second.

First years Ananya Gupta and Maggie Snider both had a 4-1 pool play record in Junior Epee and later fenced against one another in the semi-finals. Gupta advanced and placed second while Snider tied for third.

On day two of the open, the 'Cats dominated in the Div I-A Saber, placing five out of eight on the podium. The top three fencers for the event were all Wildcats. Sophomore Alexis Browne was at the top of the podium, going undefeated in pools and 4-0 in elimination. Browne defeated her teammate, first-year Robyn Song in the finals. Senior Maddy Curzon advanced to the semi-finals and tied for third.

Junior Pauline Hamilton dominated her opposition in the Div I-A Epee. Hamilton posted 6-0 in pools and five straight elimination bouts. She defeated her opponent, former NCAA Champion, Margherita Vincenti in the finals with a tight 10-9 victory.

The Northwestern fencing team begins to travel for several Invitationals and will be back in Ryan Fieldhouse for the Northwestern Duals in February.
