EVANSTON, Ill. – First year goalkeeper Mackenzie Wood won her third Big Ten Freshman of the Week award this season, as announced by the conference on Tuesday.
Wood made eight saves, her second-highest total of the season, on Sunday against Purdue to post her eighth career shutout. She also made four saves, including a penalty kick stop, in a 2-1 win over Indiana.
Wood previously won Freshman of the Week awards on Sept. 25 following her shutout of Penn State and on Aug. 28, for back to back shutouts against Iowa State and West Virginia. She is the only player with multiple freshman of the week awards, and the only player to win three awards of any kind this season.
Wood is the first player to win three Freshman of the Week awards in a season since 2014, when Frannie Crouse did so for Penn State.
Along with the Northwestern defense, Wood leads the Big Ten in shutouts (8), goals-against-average (.592) and save percentage (.857).
The #B1GCats finish up conference play this weekend with two crucial games against Illinois on Thursday at Martin Stadium and against Iowa on the road Sunday.
