McIntosh sets single-game school record with 16 assists

ROSEMONT, Ill. — Bryant McIntosh broke the school single-game assists record with 16 while adding 11 points for a double-double, as Northwestern rolled to an 83-60 victory over Minnesota at Allstate Arena on Wednesday night.

McIntosh's double-double was the second of his career and he continued his climb up the Big Ten record books as he passed Denzel Valentine and Tim Frazier to move into the top-10 all-time for career assists in the Big Ten. Wednesday's game also marks the sixth time in his career McIntosh has recorded double-digit assists, adding to his school record.

Meanwhile, Dererk Pardon recorded the eighth double-double of his career and third this season as he finished with 13 points and 12 rebounds on the night.

Scottie Lindsey finished with a game-high 22 points on 8-of-14 shooting from the field. This is the sixth game this season where Lindsey has scored at least 20 points. Aaron Falzon chipped in with 15 points, converting on 3-of-4  3-point attempts in the second half, while Vic Law finished with eight points and seven rebounds.

With the game tied at 5-5 early, Gavin Skelly came off the bench and provided a spark for the Wildcats as he knocked down a triple and then a jumper soon after to give NU a 10-9 lead.

A 16-2 run by the 'Cats extended the lead to 29-14 midway through the first half. Jordan Ash began the run with a 3-pointer before two dunks by Pardon and a layup from McIntosh helped swing the momentum in the #B1GCats' favor. Three-pointers by Lindsey and Law helped Northwestern open up its lead even further.

Later in the run, the Wildcats scored 12-unanswered points to build their lead to as many as 24 with 1:16 remaining in the half.

Northwestern also ramped up its defensive efforts, holding Minnesota without a field goal for 4:41 midway through the half and then scoreless for a 5:21 stretch later on in the period. The Wildcats' defense also did a great job contesting shots and forcing turnovers as Minnesota finished the half with 10 turnovers and converted on only 2-of-14 field goals to finish the game.

Northwestern entered the break holding a 43-21 lead. Lindsey led all scorers with 10 points, while Pardon chipped in with eight points and eight rebounds. McIntosh had six points at the break and did an excellent job facilitating the offense in the first 20 minutes, finishing the half with a game-high seven assists.

Following a Minnesota three to start the second half, the Wildcats showed no signs of slowing down to open up the game as they went on a 9-0 run to extend their lead to 52-24 with 17:10 left in the contest.

A run by Minnesota trimmed the 'Cats' lead to as few as 14, but NU promptly answered back with a 6-0 run of its own to extend the gap back to 20 points.

Falzon finished with a team-high 13 points in the second half, while Lindsey added 12 of his own. McIntosh finished the half with nine assists, the most he has recorded in a half this season. With the win, Northwestern has now won six of the last eight meetings between the two teams.

Northwestern is back in action Sunday, Jan. 14 when it travels to Bloomington, Indiana, to take on the Hoosiers at Assembly Hall. Tip time is 3:30 p.m. CT with the action being televised nationally on CBS.

Northwestern Notes vs. Minnesota – Jan. 10, 2018
• Northwestern defeated Minnesota for the sixth time in the last eight meetings.
Bryant McIntosh posted a career-high 16 assists in the game. It is the sixth time in his career that he has recorded double-figure assists, adding to his school record. No other Northwestern player has done it more than twice.
• McIntosh's assist total is a Northwestern single-game record, besting the previous mark of 14 by Patrick Baldwin vs. Youngstown State Dec. 5, 1992.
• McIntosh's previous career high and the previous NU record for assists in a Big Ten game was 13 vs. Rutgers Feb. 27, 2016. His 16 assists Wednesday ranks as a tie for the third most in a Big Ten game in league history. Michigan State's Mateen Cleaves has the Big Ten record with 20 assists against Michigan March 4, 2000.
• The 16 assists are the third most by a Division I player this season, trailing only the 22 by Oklahoma's Trae Young and 19 by USC's Jordan McLaughlin.
• McIntosh raised his career assist total to 653. He surpassed Michigan State's Denzel Valentine, Penn State's Tim Frazier and Michigan State's Scott Skiles in the contest to move into eighth place in Big Ten history in the category.

• Pardon added 13 points to earn his third double-double of the season and the eighth of his career.
• Minnesota's Jordan Murphy recorded a double-double in each of Minnesota's first 17 games this season but was held to season lows of 7 points and 2 rebounds.
