MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – No. 12 Northwestern dropped its first game of season on the road Sunday afternoon at Minnesota in a 2-0 result. 
 
The Wildcats' season-opening unbeaten streak ended at eight games, the third-longest streak in program history. 
 
The 'Cats had a penalty kick in the first half that was saved by the Gophers, who went on to take lead on a penalty kick of their own in the 24th minute. They doubled their lead on a header in the second half. 
 
First year Mackenzie Wood started in goal and made three saves for Northwestern. 
 
Senior Marisa Viggiano led the 'Cats with three shots, all on goal, including the saved penalty kick. 
 
First year Madison Donley recorded two shots off the bench, including one on goal. 
 
Outside of the penalty kick, Northwestern's best chance came in the 60th minute, when they were down 1-0. A lofted cross from the left side made its way over the entire defense to Senior Kayla Sharples. Her would-be equalizer was volleyed over the bar from ten yards out.  
 
Chicago's Big Ten Team is back in action with two more top-billed Big Ten clashes this week at Martin Stadium. The #B1GCats welcome No. 21 Penn State to Evanston on Thursday and Ohio State on Sunday. Sunday's tilt against the Buckeyes will be televised on ESPNU.
