EVANSTON, Ill. — No. 17 Northwestern (8-3, 3-3 Big Ten) will battle its second top-20 team of the weekend on Sunday, facing off against No. 7 Iowa at 10 a.m. CT at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
Â
The Wildcats will be traveling to Iowa City for the first time since battling No. 2 Iowa on Jan. 23, 2015.
Â
PRIOR RETURNS
Northwestern, competing with its highest team ranking since January 2015, has notched two ranked victories thus far through the 2017-18 campaign, knocking off both No. 16 Wisconsin and No. 18 Minnesota.
Â
Chicago's Big Ten Team hosted No. 19 Rutgers in the home finale of the season at historic Patten Gymnasium on Friday.
Â
Despite dropping the dual, Wildcat grapplers notched four wins, including a shutout major decision by Zack Chakonis (197) and a ranked win for No. 5 Ryan Deakin (149) over No. 12 Eleazar DeLuca.
Â
For Deakin, it improved his mark in dual competition to 11-0. The redshirt first-year wrestler has contributed 47 dual points to NU's team cause this season.
Â
SOME SCOUTING
Some Wildcats and Hawkeyes have prior history in competition.
Â
Colin Valdiviez (133) and Phillip Laux met at the 55th Annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championships, with Valdiviez coming away with a 4-3 decision over the senior.
Â
No. 5 Ryan Deakin (149) and No. 2 Brandon Sorensen both met at last year's Midlands Championships, with Deakin wrestling unattached. Sorensen won via 12-4 major decision — Deakin's final loss of his redshirt season.
Â
Conan Jennings (285) and No. 3 Sam Stoll have wrestled a couple of times — once in 2016 and once at this season's Midlands Championships. Stoll has come away with the win both times.
