Northwestern Comes From Behind to Beat Indiana, 2-1

9/28/2017 9:21:00 PM | Women's Soccer

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Northwestern scored two second-half goals to come from behind and win a key Big Ten match at Indiana Thursday night.

The Wildcats (6-4-2, 3-1-1) got goals from first year Regan Steigleder and junior Michele Chernesky within 20 minutes of each other in the second half to earn three more points and continue their climb up the Big Ten standings.

The defending conference champs end Thursday in a first-place tie with 10 points with Purdue and Penn State.

Chicago's Big Ten Team is on a four-match unbeaten streak with three victories and a draw, which came against No. 12 Rutgers.

Steigleder's first career goal came via header near the top of the six on a cross from junior Brenna Lovera. Steigleder placed the ball perfectly past the IU goalie's left hand to tie the match at one in the 51st minute.

Chernesky's first goal of the year, and second of her career, came in the 70th minute on an entry pass from junior Marisa Viggiano. Chernesky gathered at the top of the six and booted the ball past the goalkeeper to give Northwestern its final 2-1 margin.

Viggiano colleted her 12th career assist, and third in the past two matches, to claim sole possession of seventh place all-time in program history. She has five assists in 2017.

Indiana opened the scoring in the very first minute of play on a shot by Maya Piper that cleared the back line and passed by the outstretched glove of senior goalkeeper Lauren Clem.

Clem made three saves on the day, including a key one in the final 10 minutes to prevent Indiana from tying things up. The 2016 Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Year had to elevate to knock a Hoosier shot up and over the crossbar.

Northwestern only needed five shots on the night, spread between five student-athletes. Lovera added a shot on goal, along with the shots by Steigleder and Chernesky that found the back of the net.

A battle of first-place teams will commence on Sunday when the Wildcats stay on the road at Purdue at 12 p.m. CT.
