Wildcats Coast to 2-0 Win Over Terrapins

EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern found the net on a pair of early corner kicks, and Lauren Clem picked up her 42nd career shutout as the Wildcats cruised to a 2-0 victory over Maryland on Sunday at Martin Stadium.

The Wildcats (5-4-2, 2-1-1 B1G) have not conceded a goal for 332 consecutive minutes, and the team recorded its third shutout in four years against the Terrapins (7-2-1, 1-2-0 B1G).

Junior forward Brenna Lovera and junior defender Hannah Davison scored for the Wildcats with Marisa Viggiano recording both assists on corner kicks. Viggiano ran her career assist total to 11, putting her into a tie for seventh all-time at Northwestern with Brooke Bell (1997-2000), Shannon Schneeman (2003-07), and Erica Westrich (1996-99).

The Wildcats first score came on a corner in the 17th minute. Viggiano played an in-swinging corner, which bounced to the far post for Lovera to pounce on and open the scoring. The goal was Lovera's second of the year and the ninth of her career.

The Wildcats earned another corner just three minutes later, and this time it was Hannah Davison heading home from the near post for her first goal of the year.

Northwestern controlled the possession for most of the first half and never looked in danger of conceding. Clem recorded four easy saves, while the Wildcats pelted the goal with seven shots and five corner kicks in the half.

The second half went much like the first, with the 'Cats controlling the game. Northwestern was getting more chances off free kicks, beginning with Viggiano putting a 25 yard attempt on frame and forcing an extension save.

The Wildcats appeared to have added their third goal of the day in the 70th minute. Viggiano served up a cross that Kim Jerantowski poked past the keeper on a slide, but the goal was called off after Jerantowski was judged to be offsides.

Maryland had its first real chance of the game in the 86th minute, but Clem dove to her left to smother the shot. It was in that minute that Clem played the 7,236th of her career, passing Wendy Scholz for the most minutes played in program history.

Four minutes later, and Clem finished the 42nd clean sheet of her career, moving into sole possession of 11th place in the NCAA record book, as Northwestern sealed its 2-0 victory.

The Wildcats return to action on September 28, when they travel to Indiana for the first of a three-match road swing. Northwestern returns to Martin Stadium on October 12, when it hosts Minnesota at 8 p.m.
