EVANSTON, Ill. -- No. 14 Northwestern continues it challenging season-opening road trip this weekend as it travels to Lancaster, Pennsylvania, to participate in the third-annual Big Ten/ACC Cup.
The Wildcats face No. 12 Boston College at 3 p.m. Central time Friday before facing second-ranked Duke at 10 a.m. Sunday.
Northwestern (2-1) is in the midst of playing their first five matches of the season on the road with four of the contests coming against teams ranked among the top 13 in the nation.
NU already has one win over a ranked foe this season, defeating No. 13 Stanford, 1-0, in the season-opener for both teams last Saturday. The 'Cats are coming off their second shutout win of the young season Tuesday when they blanked Providence, 4-0. Puck Pentenga, Kirsten Mansfield, Mackenzie Keegan and Pascale Massey tallied goals for the Wildcats.
Northwestern has a 2-2 record in its first two Big Ten/ACC Cup appearances, defeating Boston College twice while dropping both meetings with Duke. Last season, the 'Cats topped the Eagles, 2-1, before falling to Duke, 3-2, in overtime.
NU is 11-1 all-time against Boston College, while Duke hosts a 5-3 edge in the series between the schools.
Five different Wildcats have scored one goal apiece through three matches while Annie Kalfas sports a 1.20 goals-against average with a .850 save percentage.
Scouting Boston College
The Eagles are off to a 2-0 start, posting a 6-1 home win over Quinnipiac before traveling to Albany for a narrow 2-1 double-overtime victory. Caroline McGovern recorded the golden goal in the win over Albany. Boston College posted a 10-10 record in 2016, falling to UConn, 5-0, in its opening NCAA tournament match. Midfielder Frederique Haverhals was selected to the preseason All-ACC team.
Scouting Duke
The Blue Devils were victorious in their lone match so far this season, defeating William & Mary, 5-0, last Friday behind two goals by Rose Tynan. Duke went 16-4 a year ago and advanced the NCAA quarterfinal round where it fell in overtime to eventual national champion Delaware. Senior back Alyssa Chillano is a preseason All-ACC selection. The Blue Devils will face Maryland Friday prior to taking on Northwestern.
