Wildcats post second shutout in three games

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- No. 14 Northwestern got back into the win column in style Tuesday afternoon, rolling to a 4-0 win at Providence.

Coming off a tough loss at fourth-ranked UConn on Sunday, the Wildcats (2-1) responded by posting their second shutout of the season while out-shooting the Friars, 16-6.

"I thought it was great to bounce back today after a disappointing loss on Sunday," said Northwestern head coach Tracey Fuchs. "The players made some nice adjustments. I thought our defense played quite well today and we were able to capitalize on our opportunities up front. We're looking forward to the Big Ten/ACC Cup and we know we need the same effort we brought today."

The Wildcats got on the board early for the second time in three games this season as they tallied a goal off a penalty corner at the 4:41 mark. Puck Pentenga was credited with the score off assists from Kirsten Mansfield and Sophia Miller.

Northwestern kept the pressure on and it paid off again at 11:16. Miller was able to drive end line and fed a pass across the cage to a waiting Mackenzie Keegan who tapped it home for her first collegiate goal to make it 2-0 in the visitors' favor.

The Wildcats had a couple of other quality scoring chances in the half but settled for the two-goal lead at the intermission after posting a 6-2 edge in shots.

NU continued to dominate play into the second half, pushing the advantage to three just under three minutes into the stanza. Following a penalty corner, Mansfield cleaned up a scrum in front of the cage by knocking home her first goal of the year.

The Wildcats weren't finished, though. Saar de Breij was able to get beyond the Friars' back line of defense and fired a cross from the edge of the circle on the right side to a streaking Massey in front who one-timed it home at 52:01 to make it 4-0 Northwestern.

It was more than enough to support Annie Kalfas in goal as the redshirt junior made three saves to earn her second blank slate of the season.

Northwestern continues its season-opening five-game road trip this weekend when it travels to Lancaster, Pennsylvania, for the Big Ten/ACC Cup. The Wildcats open the event by facing No. 12 Boston College at 3 p.m. Central time Friday.
