Northwestern Falls to No. 4 UConn
8/27/2017 1:47:00β―PM | Field Hockey
STORRS, Conn. -- No. 14 Northwestern was unable to slow down fourth-ranked UConn's high-powered attack as the Wildcats dropped a 7-0 decision to the Huskies on Sunday afternoon.
Β
NU (1-1) was able to hold UConn in check early on as Annie Kalfas made five saves in the opening 10 minutes of action. The hosts eventually got on the board at 11:06 on a goal by Amelia Iacobucci.
Β
The advantage grew to 2-0 at 16:42 when Amanda Collins scored. Northwestern had a golden opportunity to cut the deficit in half in the closing minutes of the stanza as Elena Curley got endline, maneuvered her way around a pair of defenders and fed the ball across the goalline, but the 'Cats were unable to tap it into an empty cage.
Β
UConn added a crushing goal with just 22 seconds left in the period when Margot Colenbrander scored off a penalty corner.
Β
The matchup was more balanced through the opening 15 minutes of the second half to the point where the Huskies used their timeout to regroup. Unfortunately for Northwestern, UConn did regroup and scored four goals over a span of just over 10 minutes to pull away. The hosts got tallies from Collins, Charlotte Veitner, Antonia Tiedtke and Casey Umstead to improve to 2-0 on the season.
Β
Northwestern returns to action at 3 p.m. Central time Tuesday at Providence.
