Kalfas records shutout in first career start

STORRS, Conn. -- No. 14 Northwestern got a first-half goal from Eva van Agt and a shutout from Annie Kalfas in her first career start in goal to defeat No. 14 Stanford, 1-0, in the Wildcats' season-opener Saturday.

"We had a solid performance today against a very good Stanford team," said Northwestern head coach Tracey Fuchs. "Our defense was very solid and that started with the effort of our forwards. We have lots of room to grow but this is a great start to the season."
Β
NU cashed in on an early opportunity to go in front two minutes into the contest. The 'Cats earned a penalty corner and van Agt got a shot by Kelsey Bing off an assist from Puck Pentenga to put Northwestern in front.
Β
The Wildcats dominated the action throughout the first half, out-shooting the Cardinal 9-2 while holding a 5-2 edge in penalty corners.
Β
After being held in check over the opening 35 minutes of play, Stanford was the aggressor to open the second period. The Cardinal had only one shot on goal in the first half put posted four in the first nine minutes following the intermission. However, Kalfas was up to the task each time to maintain the lead.
Β
Stanford used its timeout with 15 minutes remaining, but it was Northwestern that seized momentum following the break. The Wildcats earned four consecutive penalty corners, but Pentenga was turned away on each occasion with Bing making a pair of saves.
Β
After Northwestern held off a Stanford penalty corner with three and a half minutes left, the Wildcats were issued a green card with 1:22 left.
Β
The Wildcats were forced to hold off the Cardinal one last time as Stanford earned a corner with time expired in regulation. Corinne Zanolli's initial shot was blocked before Kalfas saved a shot by Sarah Johnson to secure the hard-fought win for Northwestern.
Β
NU finished with a 16-12 edge in shots and a 10-4 advantage in penalty corners. Bing made 10 saves for Stanford while Kalfas made six stops to earn her first career shutout after splitting time on three blank slates a year ago.
Β
Northwestern returns to action at noon Central time Sunday when it takes on fourth-ranked UConn.
