Wildcats Drop 2-0 Decision at Long Beach State

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Northwestern dropped its first of two West Coast road matches this week, falling 2-0 to Long Beach State on Thursday night.
The Beach's Kaitlin Fregulia scored the match's first goal in the 49th minute, which would prove to be the game-winner for the 2016 Big West tournament champions. Katie Pingel followed with a late goal in the 83rd minute to give LBSU its final margin.
No. 22/16 Northwestern was unable to find its rhythm offensively, taking just six shots compared to Long Beach State's 20.
The Beach came out firing, getting off four shots in the first 15 minutes of the contest, two of which were on target and saved by All-American goalkeeper Lauren Clem.
The shots continued to pile up as the match went on, as LBSU racked up its final tally, six of which were on target.
Clem ultimately set a season high with four saves after only having one chance in each of the first two matches.
Northwestern's best look came in the 79th minute when Nia Harris got a clean look off a pass from Regan Steigleder, but the shot went just high and wide. Hannah Davison had another close call off a corner in the 86th minute, but it was blocked. Four of Northwestern's six shots came in the final 12 minutes.
First year student-athlete Mikayla Hampton took the first shot of the night for the Wildcats, the first attempt of her young career. Junior Marisa Viggiano led the way with three attempts.
The 'Cats had to play the final 23 minutes of the match a player down after Grace Orndorff's second yellow card in the 77th minute.
Chicago's Big Ten Team continues its West Coast swing with a match at Loyola Marymount on Sunday at 2 p.m. CT. The 'Cats return home to Martin Stadium on Sunday, Sept. 3 to host Cincinnati at 1 p.m.
