LOS ANGELES – Brenna Lovera's goal in the 86th minute proved huge for Northwestern, earning the Wildcats a 2-2 draw on the road at Loyola Marymount Sunday afternoon.
Lovera missed nearly all of the 2016 season due to injury, but on Sunday, the junior got a feed from classmate Kayla Sharples and put it in the back of the net for the game-tying goal with time winding down in regulation. It was Lovera's eighth career goal.
No. 22/16 Northwestern (2-1-1) trailed for most of the second half following a LMU goal in the 52nd minute, but Sharples-to-Lovera helped the Wildcats end their three-match road trip with a draw in a tough road environment.
Loyola Marymount got on the board early in the match with a goal in the 15th minute by Pilar Torres. The Lions goal in the 52nd minute came via Sarina Bolden. Both were headed in.
Junior midfielder Marisa Viggiano started the scoring for the 'Cats when she buried a penalty kick into the bottom left corner of the net in the 48th minute. The goal was the first of the year for Viggiano and the second of her career.
Northwestern had plenty of looks throughout the match with 14 corner kicks and seven shots on goal. The Lions held a 16-14 advantage overall on shots, but NU was relentless in the extra time, especially the second extra frame, outshooting LMU, 5-0.
Goalkeeper Lauren Clem made five saves.
Northwestern returns home to Martin Stadium next Sunday, Sept. 3, to take on Cincinnati at 1 p.m. That match begins a three-match home stand to conclude non-conference play for the Wildcats.
