EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern rookie Madi Kennel has been named the Big Ten Co-Freshman of the Week after scoring a pair of goals during opening weekend, the conference announced Tuesday.

Kennel scored both of her goals back-to-back in the Wildcats' 3-0 win at Illinois State on Sunday. Her first collegiate goal in the 54th minute of that match proved to be the game-winner. She added another in the 78th minute.

The Redondo Beach, California, native leads the 'Cats in goals (2), points (4), and shots (4) after the first two matches of the season.

Kennel shared the weekly honor with Michigan's Sarah Stratigakis.

The first year student-athlete is one of three rookies to claim a spot in the Northwestern starting lineup to begin the year. The 22nd-ranked Wildcats are off to a 2-0 start, adding a 1-0 shutout of DePaul in the season opener to the win over Illinois State.

Kennel returns home this week as Chicago's Big Ten Team plays at Long Beach State on Thursday at 9 p.m. and Loyola Marymount on Sunday at 2 p.m.
