EVANSTON, Ill. — Northwestern volleyball has earned the AVCA Team Academic Award for the 2016-17 season, it was announced Monday.
The Wildcats were one of 145 Division I teams who surpassed the 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average mark.
"Northwestern is one of the elite academic institutions in the nation and in the world," said head coach Shane Davis. "Competing within the Big Ten Conference — the premier conference for volleyball in the nation — only adds to the challenges our student-athletes face on a daily basis, but it is one that we thrive on."
This is yet another academic distinction for the volleyball squad.
In July, it was announced that Kayla Morin and Maddie Slater were named Big Ten Distinguished Scholars, awarded to student-athletes with a minimum GPA of 3.7 or higher for the previous academic year. Nine players were awarded Academic All-Big Ten plaudits in December, given to student-athletes with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
The volleyball team also received a 1,000 multi-year rate from the NCAA's Academic Progress Rate (APR), which measures eligibility, retention, graduation, and academic performance. The team is a part of an elite group of 93 teams from across the nation that have received the Public Recognition Award, given to teams placing in the top-10 percent of their respective sports, in each of the last 12 years of the NCAA's program.
The AVCA's award was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year and honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that display excellence in the classroom. The association also honored Northwestern for reaching their Dig Pink fundraising goal through the Side-Out Foundation, which raised $91,671 for breast cancer research in the 2016-17 season.
