WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Northwestern claimed its third Big Ten Conference series win of the season as the Wildcats topped Purdue, 8-7, on Sunday at Alexander Field to take two games from the Boilermakers on the weekend.
Northwestern (19-27, 8-10 B1G) outhit Purdue (26-20, 10-8 B1G), 13-12, in a back-and-forth contest that saw six lead changes.
Tyler Lass picked up the win after throwing 2.2-scoreless innings of relief, allowing only one hits and striking out one. Pete Hofman picked up his second save of the series by tossing a scoreless 1.1 innings, only surrendering one hit and fanning one.
Freshman Alex Erro led the way at the plate for the Wildcats with a 3-for-5, four-RBI performance, which included a three-run home run – his third diner of the season. Erro also accounted for two runs scored.
Senior Joe Hoscheit collected a team-high four hits in the game, while Connor Lind and Ben Dickey each tallied two hits. Dickey reached base four times on Sunday and scored three runs.
For the third consecutive time this series, Erro led off the game with a hit. Dunn moved Erro into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt and a double down the right field line from Hoscheit scored the freshman to put Northwestern in front, 1-0.
Hoscheit's double was the 200th hit of his career.
The Boilermakers answered in the bottom half of the frame by scoring a pair of runs.
Connor Lind notched a one-out single in the top of the second and Ben Dickey walked to put a pair of runners on for Erro. The Miami, Florida, native worked the count full before launching a home run over the right field fence to put NU back in front, 4-2. The home run was Erro's third of the season.
Purdue retook the lead, 5-4, in the bottom of the third with three runs on two hits.
The Boilermakers lead did not last for long. With two outs and runners on second and third in the top of the fourth, Dunn dropped a hit down the right field line to bring home a pair of runs and give the Wildcats a 6-5 lead.
After Purdue scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth to go back in front, 7-6, Erro came up with a clutch piece of hitting to force the sixth lead change of the game. Jake Schieber reached base on a walk and Ben Dickey put runners on the corners with two outs. Erro drove a pitch to center field that was misplayed after the bounce and allowed both base runners to score and give Northwestern an 8-7 lead.
Hofman entered the one-run game in the bottom of the eighth with the bases loaded and two outs to force a pop fly and preserve Northwestern's lead. Hofman allowed a lead-off single in ninth, but then set down three-straight to get the Wildcats the victory.
Northwestern will return to action next weekend with a trip to Maryland.
