EVANSTON, Ill. — Northwestern baseball will play its final road series of the 2017 season when it travels to Maryland for a three-game set against the Terrapins at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium.
The Wildcats and Terrapins will open the series on Friday, May 12, with a first pitch at 1:00 p.m. CT, before playing Saturday at 1 p.m. CT and closing out the set on Sunday at noon CT.
Northwestern (19-27, 8-10 B1G) enters the weekend tied for the eighth and final spot in the Big Ten Conference Tournament. The Wildcats are looking to make postseason play for the first time since 2010. Northwestern's 8-10 mark in league play is tied with Michigan State, but the Spartans own the tiebreaker over the Wildcats after taking a series from NU on April 28-29.
Maryland (32-15, 14-7 B1G) is playing its final Big Ten Conference series of the year this weekend. The Terps are currently in second place after dropping a series on the road last weekend to Illinois. Maryland is looking forward to returning to its friendly confines. The Terps are 19-1 at home this season with their only defeat coming in the form of a 6-2 decision to Michigan on March 26.
The Terrapins boast one of the Big Ten's top hitters and pitchers. Marty Costes is batting .346 in 47 games this season, which is good for seventh among league batters. Costes leads the conference with 65 hits this season and ranks in the top five for total bases (106). Zach Jancarski is Maryland's other threat at the plate. Jancarski has 63 hits for a .330 batting average this season with 42 runs scored.
The 'Cats are slated to face Brian Shaffer (6-2, 1.78 ERA) in Friday's opener. Shaffer has been one of the top arms in the league play this season. His 1.78 ERA is the top mark in the conference and his 83 strikeouts in 81.0 innings ranks second among Big Ten pitchers. The Terps will then go with Tyler Blohm (8-4, 3.17 ERA) and Taylor Blohm (5-2, 4.26 ERA). Tyler Blohm's 3.17 ERA ranks in the top-10 in the Big Ten.
In the last meeting between the two programs in May of 2015, Northwestern won a pair of games to take the series. The Wildcats fell one run shy of completing the sweep, dropping the finale, 4-3. All three games in the series were decided by one run.
