Northwestern Drops Series Opener at Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Northwestern fell to Maryland, 7-1, on Friday afternoon in the series opener.
Northwestern's (19-28, 8-11 B1G) Joe Hoscheit led the way offensively for Northwestern with a pair of singles, while senior Grant Peikert recorded a pinch-hit, RBI double in the top of the eighth inning to score Northwestern's lone run.
Maryland (33-15, 15-7 B1G) Brian Shaffer was the story of the day. Shaffer (7-2) earned the win after only allowing one run in 8.0 innings of work. The right-hander tallied eight strikeouts and only surrended one walk.
Cooper Wetherbee (2-3) took the loss in the effort, but the left-hander was solid through the first four innings. Wetherbee only allowed two singles in four innings, retiring 12 batters in the 14 he faced. He finished his day with 6.0 innings pitched, five runs and one walk.
The Wildcats had an opportunity to get their offense going in the top of the fourth inning when Jack Dunn and Hoscheit recorded back-to-back singles with no outs. Dunn was picked off on a sacrifice bunt attempt and a line-drive double play ended the threat.
Maryland broke open the scoring in the bottom of the fifth inning when Zach Jancarski singled with runners on second and third. A wild pitch in the next at-bat brought home another Maryland run to make it a 2-0 game.
The Terrapins added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth. A RBI single from AJ Lee followed by a two-run home run by Kevin Smith pushed Maryland's lead to 5-0.
After Maryland added another run in the bottom of the seventh, Northwestern was able to end the Terps' shutout in the top of the eighth. Head coach Spencer Allen pinch hit Peikert after Connor Lind drew a walk. Peikert, who has been out of the lineup since March 10 due to injury, crushed the first pitch he saw off the left field fence for a RBI-double.
Maryland added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth to go on to win, 7-1.
Due to inclement weather in the forecast, tomorrow's game between Northwestern and Maryland has been moved to 2 p.m. CT.
