Northwestern Edged in Pitchers' Duel at Purdue

5/6/2017 9:19:00 PM | Baseball

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — It was a pitchers' duel Saturday night at Alexander Field that saw Purdue edge Northwestern, 2-1, in 12 innings.

Alec Oland's double to left center in the bottom of the 12th scored Grant Hayden from first base and moved Purdue to 26-19 overall on the campaign and 10-7 in Big Ten play. The loss dropped Northwestern to 18-27 overall and 7-10 in league action.

Freshman Hank Christie was stellar in his start for Northwestern. The rookie went 8.0 innings, allowing six hits, one unearned run, striking out three and walking one. Sam Lawrence earned the loss after working 3.1 innings, allowing one run, while striking out two.

Purdue leaned on Gareth Stroh, who went 7.1 innings and only allowed one run, while striking out five Northwestern batters. Ross Learnard earned the victory. He pitched 5.1-scoreless innings of relief and only allowed three hits.

Joe Hoscheit, Matt Hopfner and Jack Claeys each notched a pair of hits in the contest. Claeys drove in the Wildcats' lone run.

After scoring four runs in the top of the first inning of the series opener yesterday, Northwestern looked like it was going to repeat the performance as Erro, Hoscheit and Hopfner each collected singles, but the Wildcats could not capitalize on the opportunity.

Northwestern threatened again in the top of the fourth when Hopfner doubled and advanced to third on a wild pitch with one away. A line out by Claeys and strikeout from Leo Kaplan ended the threat.

Purdue broke open the scoring in the bottom of the fifth inning by taking advantage of a Northwestern error. Milo Beam reached first on a bunt single, but Chrisitie tried to make a play and ended up throwing the ball away. A single from Harry Shipley in the next at-bat brought home Beam to put up Purdue, 1-0.

The Wildcats evened the game in the top of the eighth thanks to Claeys' clutch hitting. Dunn and Hoscheit drew back-to-back walks to put runners in scoring in position. With two away, Claeys drove a pitch to left field a relay throw to home was cutoff and Hoscheit was tagged out trying for third, but Dunn has already scored the tying run.

Claeys put the Wildcats in position to score the go-ahead run in the top of the 11th inning with a lead-off double, but Kaplan flew out in the next at-bat and then Charlie Maxwell roped a line drive to first that doubled off Claeys.

Purdue loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the 12th, but Lawrence held tough and got a fly out to left field to get out of the jam.
