'Cats Top Maryland, Play For #B1G Title

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Seventh-seeded Northwestern defeated No. 4 Maryland, 6-5, in the Big Ten Tournament to advance to the championship game for the first time since 1984.
The Wildcats will face Iowa at noon CT with a Big Ten Championship on the line and an automatic-bid in the NCAA Tournament. The 'Cats have not made the NCAA Tournament since 1957.
Senior Cooper Wetherbee delivered one of the best performances of his career at a crucial time, throwing 6.2 innings, giving up three hits, two runs, and recording nine strikeouts, tied for his career high, to earn his fourth win of the season.
Freshman Sam Lawrence earned the save with a clutch performance out of the bullpen, escaping a bases-loaded jam in a one run game in the top of the eighth with a foul out and an inning-ending double play.
Northwestern scored all six of its runs in the first two innings. Junior Jack Claeys launched a three-run home run in the first inning to score Joe Hoscheit and Matt Hopfner. Jack Dunn had a two-RBI single in the second and Hopfner added a RBI single as well to make it 6-0.
The win moves Northwestern to 27-29 on the season, and 3-1 in the Big Ten Tournament. The Wildcats will face Iowa (37-20), who they took a series from in Evanston earlier this season in April.
