Northwestern's Magical B1G Tournament Ends in Title Game

5/28/2017 4:23:00 PM | Baseball

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Northwestern's magical run through the 2017 Big Ten Conference Tournament came to an end in the championship game on Sunday, falling to Iowa, 13-4, at Bart Kaufman Field.

Northwestern (27-30) earned the seventh seed in the conference tournament and proceeded to collect wins over No. 2 Michigan, No. 3 Minnesota and No. 4 Maryland in its run to the tournament's championship game for the first time since 1984.

The Wildcats' 27 wins this season is a 12-game improvement from the 2016 season when the club went 15-39. Northwestern's trip to the Big Ten Conference Tournament was its ninth in program history and first since 2010.

Because of the Big Ten's curfew rule and the Minnesota/Iowa semifinal being the longest game in Big Ten Conference Tournament history, Northwestern's elimination-semifinal game against Maryland that was scheduled for Saturday evening was pushed to Sunday morning, forcing Northwestern to play two games on championship Sunday. The Wildcats won the semifinal game, 6-5, in dramatic fashion to advance to the title game.

Iowa (38-20) jumped on the Wildcats early on Sunday, scoring five runs in the first inning and never looked back. The Hawkeyes' Drake Robison started and went 7.0 innings, holding Northwestern to one run on four hits, while fanning six.

Jack Dunn and Nick Paciorek collected Northwestern's lone extra-base hits, each recording a double. Ben Dickey went 1-for-4 in the game with a team-high two RBI.

The Hawkeyes were in control throughout the game and eventually built a 13-1 lead heading into the top of the ninth inning. Northwestern scored three runs in its final at-bats to finish the game with a final of 13-4.
