Sam Shropshire Earns ITA Midwest Region Arthur Ashe, Jr. Award

EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern senior Sam Shropshire earned the Midwest Region's Arthur Ashe, Jr. Award, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) announced.
The Arthur Ashe, Jr. Award is presented annually to a junior or senior who demonstrates outstanding sportsmanship, leadership and character, along with humanitarian accomplishments, scholastic achievements and athletic accomplishments.
The national winners will be announced Tuesday, May 23.
Shropshire has carved out a place among the greats in Northwestern tennis history. He is one of only three players in program history to earn All-Big Ten honors four times, three of which were First Team nods. He started his career as the Big Ten Freshman of the Year and ITA Rookie of the Year and ended it with 77 singles and 69 doubles wins, ranking in the top-10 in career winning percentage in both categories.
"Sam has led by example while also being a vocal and impactful leader with his teammates," head coach Arvid Swan said. "He has represented Northwestern with integrity and class in competition while winning so many meaningful matches in his career."
Shropshire has been actively involved with Northwestern's annual Field Day, teaching the game of tennis to local youth, and he currently serves on the school's Student Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) Community Outreach Committee.
The three-time team captain will graduate from Northwestern with a degree in Communication Studies.
