Wildcats Fall in Second Round at No. 8 Stony Brook, 13-9

STONY BROOK, N.Y. — The Northwestern lacrosse team ran out of gas in the second half Sunday at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium, falling to No. 8-seed Stony Brook in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, 13-9.
The loss ends the Wildcats' season with an 11-10 record, while the SeaWolves improved to 20-1 and advanced to the quarterfinals to take on No. 1-seed Maryland next weekend.
The Wildcats and SeaWolves played an even 30 minutes to start the game and went to the break tied, 6-6, but the offense went cold in the second half and mustered just three goals.
Stony Brook opened the game with a score just eight seconds into the contest, but the Wildcats combination of seniors Christina Esposito and Danita Stroup picked up right where they left off in the first round, teaming up to at the 28:21 mark of the first half to tie the game, 1-1.
Sophomore Claire Quinn scored her fifth goal of the tournament just under three minutes later, converting a free-position from the right side of the 8-meter to give the 'Cats their first lead, 2-1.
After exchanging goals again, the Wildcats built a two-goal cushion thanks to the Canadian connection between freshman Megan Kinna and Stroup. The senior capped a first-half hat trick with a pair of goals on feed from the freshman to give the 'Cats a 5-3 lead.
The offense went cold for the next 13-plus minutes however as Stony Brook reeled off a 3-0 run to take its first lead of the game, 6-5. Kinna dished out her third assist of the first half to help the 'Cats respond, finding senior Catie Ingrilli for her 27th goal of the season to tie the game at the break, 6-6.
The Wildcats scored the opening goal of the second half when Kinna found Beardsley with 26:00 on the clock to take the lead, 7-6, but the offense was held scoreless for the next eight minutes while Stony Brook reeled off a 3-0 run to go out in front, 9-7.
Ingrilli scored her second goal of the game on Kinna's fifth assist of the contest with 18:18 left to cut the deficit to one, 9-8, but again the SeaWolves sparked a 3-0 run to push their lead to four and the 'Cats were never able to respond.
Junior Shelby Fredericks and sophomore Mallory Weisse set a pair of milestones in the contest. Fredericks broke the Northwestern single-season draw controls record with 165, while Weisse set the single-season mark for saves with 169.
Stroup finished with a team-high four points in her final Northwestern contest, while Esposito had a goal and assist for her 17th multi-point game of the season.
