COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Freshman Hank Christie posted a quality start, going 8.0 innings and Northwestern scored seven runs in the fifth inning to help the Wildcats even the series with a 11-3 win over Maryland Saturday afternoon at Bob 'Turtle' Smith Stadium.

Northwestern (20-28, 9-11 B1G) handed Maryland (33-16, 15-8) its second home loss of the season. The Terrapins are now 20-2 at their friendly confines.

Christie (4-4) was spectacular in his 13th start of the season. The right-handed freshman went 8.0 innings and only six hits, three runs, one walk, while striking out three to earn the win. Tyler Lass pitched a scoreless ninth inning.

Joe Hoscheit led the way for the Wildcats at the plate with a 3-for-5 performance, including a triple and two RBI. Connor Lind, Jake Schieber and Nick Pacioreck each recorded two RBI. Matt Hopfner finished 1-for-3 with a RBI and two runs scored.

After a pair of scoreless innings to start the game, Pacioreck got tallied the first home run of his career with a solo shot in the top of the third inning to put Northwestern ahead, 1-0.

Maryland answered with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the third to take its first lead of the day, 2-1.

With runners on second and third in the top of the fourth, Jack Claeys put a ball in play toward third base and reached on an error at first that allowed Hoscheit to score a run and tie the game. Lind brought home Hopfner from third in the next at-bat to put the #B1GCats in front, 3-2.

Northwestern scored seven runs on five hits in the top of the fifth inning to build its lead to 10-2. Nine consecutive Wildcats reached base at one point during the inning, including four straight via hits.

Maryland had no answer for the Wildcats' offensive outburst. Christie threw three straight scoreless innings and kept the Terps off the board until Nick Dunn hit a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth.

Schieber's RBI single in the top of the ninth put the exclamation point on Northwestern's 11-3 win.

Northwestern and Maryland will meet in the rubber game tomorrow at noon CT.
