Erro's Go-Ahead Home Run Gives 'Cats Series Win Over Maryland

5/14/2017 4:27:00 PM | Baseball

COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Freshman Alex Erro's go-ahead home run in the top of the 11th inning gave Northwestern a 6-5 win on Sunday and a series victory over Maryland.

Northwestern (21-28, 10-11 B1G) moves into eighth place in the Big Ten standings with the victory with one series remaining on the slate. The loss, which was only Maryland's third defeat at home this season (20-3), sends the Terrapins to 33-17 on the campaign and 15-9 in league play.

Erro led the way offensively for the Wildcats, going 4-for-6 at the plate with two runs scored, two RBI and a home run. Jack Dunn (RBI), Matt Hopfner, Connor Lind (2 RBI) and Jake Schieber each tallied two hits.

Hopfner moved into a tie for eighth place on Northwestern's all-time hits list with 229 knocks. The Edina, Minnesota, native passed Joe Girardi (227) with his first base hit of the game.

Northwestern's pitching was stellar in the performance. Josh Davis started the contest and went 4.1 innings, only allowing four hits, three runs, two earned, while striking out a pair.

The Wildcats' bullpen did not allow an earned run. Senior Pete Hofman threw 3.2 innings of hitless relief, while only walking one batter and striking out four. Josh Levy picked up the victory after pitching a perfect final 1.2 innings, allowing no hits, no walks and striking out two.

Sam Lawrence, Richard Fordon and JR Reimer all saw action out of the pen and helped the Wildcats to victory.

Sunday's contest started out as a pitchers' duel as the Wildcats and Terrapins played four innings of scoreless baseball.

Northwestern got on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth inning with a pair of runs. Leo Kaplan led the frame off with a double down the left field line, but Maryland tried to tamper the momentum by collecting back-to back outs.

With two away, Erro singled back up the middle to score Kaplan from second and make it a 1-0 game. Dunn singled in the following at-bat and tried to stretch it into a double, but was throw out. Erro had already touched home plate before the tag out to put NU up 2-0.

Maryland took advantage of a pair of Northwestern errors in the bottom half of the fifth inning to score five runs, only two of them earned.

The Wildcats answered Maryland's five-run inning by plating two runs in the top of the sixth to make it a one-run contest. Hoscheit was hit by a pitch to start the inning and Hopfner singled to put runners on first and second with no out. A Claeys' fly ball to center moved Hoscheit over to third. With runners on the corners, Hopfner was caught in a rundown between first and second that allowed Hoscheit to score from home to put NU within striking distance, 5-4.

Lind's two-out double in the top of the eighth inning scored Hopfner from second to tie the game at 5-5.

Zeroes populated the scoreboard through the ninth and 10th innings.

Erro stepped to the dish to leadoff the 11th and took a pitch over the left center wall for his fourth home run of the season.
