Northwestern had a rough start in this contest. In the top of the first, Maryland plated three runs on three hits, aided by the Wildcats giving up three extra bases on errors to take an early 3-0 edge in the contest.
NU fought right back in the bottom of the first with a monster six-run rally of its own to wrestle away the lead. The Wildcats started by loading the bases on a Sabrina Rabin walk, a Krista Williams single and a Marissa Panko walk. Anna Petersen started the scoring with a sacrifice fly before, with two outs, Brooke Marquez crushed a two-run triple to right-center to knot the game.
Marquez's triple started a two-out rally that added three more to NU's total. Morgan Newport drove Marquez in with a single, then walks to Lily Novak and Sammy Nettling loaded the bases once again. Rabin came back to the plate and slapped a two-run single back through the middle, capping the rally with NU on top, 6-3.
Maryland started the bottom of the second by lifting starting pitcher Madison Martin in favor of Lauren Graves. The new hurler walked Panko to start the inning, then committed an illegal pitch to push Panko to second. Petersen drove in her junior teammate with a hard-hit ground ball that bounced high over the head of the third baseman and on out into left field for an RBI double. Later in the inning, Novak ripped an RBI base knock of her own into left to make it an 8-3 contest.
With the score the same in the bottom of the third, Rabin walked to reach base for the third time in the game. With two outs, she found herself at third and was allowed to come home on an illegal pitch call to extend NU's cushion to six, 9-3.
Maryland took advantage of a two-out Northwestern error in the fourth to get one run back, but the Wildcats nearly finished things off early in the bottom of the fifth. Novak started the rally with a single, giving way to pinch runner Eva Stees. One out later, Rabin singled and Williams reached on an error that allowed Stees to score. With runners now at second and third, Maryland re-entered their starter Martin into the circle.
Panko made it an 11-4 game with a sacrifice fly to left that plated Rabin. Martin hit Petersen with a pitch before Nelson softly singled to center. Williams came barreling around third intending to get NU to the run-rule threshold of eight, but a perfect throw and tag put her out and send the contest to the sixth.
A one-out walk in the top of the sixth prompted head coach Kate Drohan to insert Newport into the circle in relief of Winegarner. Newport surrendered one hit, but nothing further in keeping the score the same – until the end of the game.
Rabin was a true sparkplug atop the lineup in the game, finished 2-for-2 with two walks, two RBIs and three runs scored. Novak collected two hits, Marquez and Petersen drove in two, and Panko scored twice.
Winegarner (4-3) received the win, allowing four runs (two earned) on nine hits and a walk with seven strikeouts in 5.1 innings of work. Newport tossed the final 1.2 innings, allowing no runs and two hits.
