State College, Pa. -- Northwestern clinched the series against Penn State with a 7-4 win Saturday night in game two behind a quality start from Hank Christie.
The freshman, Hank Christe, earned his third win of the season and finished with 6.2 innings pitched, no earned runs, five hits allowed and four strikeouts.
The Wildcats improved to 16-22 on the season and 5-6 in the Big Ten. They lie half a game back of eighth place and the final Big Ten Tournament spot. In addition, the 'Cats have improved their stellar April record to 10-5.
Senior Joe Hoscheit continued his recent hot stretch and finished 1 for 3 with two RBIs and a run. Sophomore Jack Dunn reached base four times and finished with a hit, three runs, and his team-leading ninth stolen base of the season.
Freshman Sam Lawrence threw 2.1 innings of relief.
Penn State took the lead in the first inning after a Mason Nadeau hit a leadoff single and scored on a throwing error. The unearned run was the only one Christie allowed all night.
Northwestern responded with a monster third inning to take the lead. Charlie Maxwell scorched a double down the right field line and advanced to third when Nick Paciorek reached on an error. A wild pitch scored Maxwell followed up by a walk from Dunn. Hoscheit came through with an RBI single to score Paciorek to take the lead at 2-1. Matt Hopfner roped a double down the right field line to bring in Dunn before another wild pitch scored Hoscheit to make it 4-1.
The Wildcats added another run in the fifth to lead 5-1. Dunn reached on an error, stole second, and was brought home by an RBI single to left field from Jack Claeys. Dunn scored again in the seventh after he singled to left field. He advanced two bases after a failed pickoff attempt and made it 6-1 with a long sac fly from Hoscheit.
Penn State cut the deficit to 6-4 in bottom of the eighth with an RBI double from Willie Burger and a two-RBI single from Conlin Hughes.
The 'Cats padded their lead with a run in the top of the ninth. Paciorek singled to left field and advanced around the diamond with a wild pitch and a throwing error from the pitcher to make it 7-4.
Lawrence rebounded from his eighth inning and closed the ninth with back-to-back strikeouts to end the game. The lefty earned his second save of the season.
Chicago's Big Ten Team is back in action tomorrow when they look to sweep the Nittany Lions in game three of the series. First pitch is set for noon central time.
