STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – Braxton Giavedoni singled to left field in the bottom of the ninth to give Penn State a walk-off victory over Northwestern, 2-1, in Sunday's series finale.
Northwestern (16-23, 5-7 B1G) clinched the series by taking the first two games of the weekend. Penn State improves to 13-26 on the season and 2-10 in conference play.
The Nittany Lions held Northwestern to just three hits on Sunday. Senior Joe Hoscheit hit his fifth home run of the season with a solo shot in the top of the sixth inning. Connor Lind and Ben Dickey each tallied singles.
Freshman Matt Gannon started the game and went 6.0 innings, allowing no runs and held Penn State to just three hits. Sam Lawrence was credited with the loss after allowing the walk-off hit in the bottom of the ninth.
Zeroes populated the scoreboard until Hoscheit's blast in the top of the sixth. Penn State evened the contest in the bottom of the seventh on a sacrifice fly.
Lawrence came up clutch in the bottom of the eighth when he entered from the pen with the bases loaded and one out. Jack Dunn caught a line drive and Lawrence got a ground out to get out of the jam.
Northwestern will have a mid-week contest on Wednesday, April 26, at Chicago State, before hosting Michigan State at Miller Park next weekend.
