Northwestern Begins Weekend with 12-5 Win over Penn State

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — Northwestern used a nine-run sixth inning to stage a come-from-behind 12-5 win over Penn State on Friday night in the series opener.
Northwestern (15-22, 4-6 B1G) was led by Joe Hoscheit, who drove in three runs on a 2-for-4 performance at the plate. Ten different Wildcats scored runs on Friday night.
Tonight's victory was Northwestern's first over Penn State since April 10, 2011.
Senior Cooper Weatherbee got the start and went 4.2 innings, allowing four runs on seven hits, while striking out four and only issuing two walks in 23 batters faced. Tyler Lass earned the victory after getting an out in the bottom of the fifth.
Penn State falls to 12-25 overall on the season and 1-9 in Big Ten play.
The Nittany Lions took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning by plating a pair of runs on back-to-back at-bats. Brett Davis dropped a sacrifice bunt to score the first run of the game before Logan Goodnight singled through the left side to make it a 2-0 game.
The Wildcats got on the board in the top of the fourth when the reigning Big Ten Player of the Week hit his seventh double in league play to score Jack Dunn from second base and made it a 2-1 ballgame.
Penn State added runs in the fourth and fifth innings to build its lead to 4-1 heading into the top of the sixth.
After Dunn and Hoscheit reached base on walks, Hopfner roped a double down the right field line to score Dunn. An RBI-single from Jack Claeys in the next at-bat scored Hoscheit and brought the Wildcats within a run, 4-3. Northwestern brought the game even, 4-4, when Jake Scheiber dropped a sacrifice bunt down that scored Hopfner on a throwing error.
Four consecutive wild pitches by Penn State brought home four Northwestern runs and gave NU an 8-4 lead with no outs. Hoscheit was responsible for plating the final two runs of the frame with a single up the middle putting the Wildcats ahead, 10-4.
The Wildcats scored their fifth run on a wild pitch in the top of the seventh and Penn State added a run in the bottom of the inning to make it 11-5. NU added a run in the top of the eighth.
Pete Hofman tossed 2.0 innings andstruck out a pair, while Danny Katz and JR Reimer each worked an inning to close of the game.
Game two of the series will take place tomorrow, Saturday, April 22, at 5 p.m. CT.
