EVANSTON, Ill. --
Northwestern travels to Washington, D.C. to participate in the 2017 Big Ten Men's Basketball Tournament beginning Thursday. The Wildcats are the No. 6 seed and open play at 8 p.m. Central time Thursday against 14th-seeded Rutgers, a 66-57 winner over 11th-seeded Rutgers Wednesday night.

The winner of Thursday's game advances to face third-seeded Maryland in Friday's quarterfinal round.

NU's No. 6 seed matches its best seed in Big Ten tournament history. The Wildcats also were seeded sixth in 2004.

Northwestern's 21 wins this season are a school record while it reached 10 Big Ten wins this season for the first time since the 1932-33 campaign. The Wildcats tied for fifth place in the league standings, their best Big Ten finish since tying for fifth in 2003-04.

Northwestern is 3-0 this season against its two potential opponents Thursday. NU defeated Ohio State, 74-72, in the only matchup between the schools Jan. 22 in Columbus. The Wildcats won both of their matchups with Rutgers, winning 69-60 Jan. 12 in Piscataway and 69-65 Feb. 18 in Evanston.

Northwestern lost its only previous meeting with Ohio State in the Big Ten tournament when the Wildcats fell 67-61 to the top-ranked Buckeyes in overtime March 11, 2011. The Wildcats have never faced Rutgers in the Big Ten tournament.

Bryant McIntosh, a consensus second-team All-Big Ten selection, became Northwestern's career assist leader in last Sunday's game against Purdue. He has 531 assists, surpassing the previous mark of 528 held by Michael Thompson (2008-11). McIntosh's total is the most of any non-senior in the nation.

Three Northwestern players earned All-Big Ten recognition when the league honors were announced Monday. McIntosh was a consensus second-team all-league pick, while Scottie Lindsey was named by the league's head coaches to the third team and honorable mention by the media. In addition, redshirt sophomore Vic Law was selected by the coaches to the five-member All-Defensive Team.

It's the first time NU has had two All-Big Ten picks in the same years since John Shurna and Drew Crawford in 2012. Law is the first Wildcat to be named to the All-Defensive Team since Jeremy Nash in 2010. McIntosh was a Big Ten All-Freshman Team selection in 2015 and was a consensus honorable mention All-Big Ten pick a year ago.
