Wildcats Fall at No. 8 Stony Brook

3/5/2017 1:46:00 PM | Women's Lacrosse

STONY BROOK, N.Y. — Junior Shelby Fredericks matched a career-high with three assists and finished with a season-high 11 draw controls, but Northwestern struggled for the second-straight game to find an offensive rhythm as the Wildcats lost at No. 8 Stony Brook Sunday afternoon, 13-5.

The Wildcats mustered just one first-half goal — a free-position by senior Catie Ingrilli — and didn't get much else going until late in Sunday's contest. The Seawolves (4-0) score the first four goals of the game while holding NU scoreless for nearly 17 minutes before Ingrilli scored her seventh goal of the season. The Long Island native has scored in all six games.

The Seawolves started another 4-0 run with 6:46 to go in the first half and built on their 6-1 halftime lead coming out of the break with the first two goals of the second half to extend the lead to 8-1.

Fredericks dished out the first of her three second-half assists when she found senior Danita Stroup with just over 20 minutes left to play in an attempt to spark a Wildcats' comeback. The momentum was short lived however as the Seawolves again ripped off four-straight goals to push their lead to double digits, 12-2.

Junior co-captain Sheila Nesselbush scored her second goal of the season on a feed from Fredericks with just under five minutes to play and Fredericks matched her career high two minutes later when she found Stroup for the second time. Senior co-captain Christina Esposito capped a 3-0 run with her team-leading 17th goal of the season with 25 seconds remaining.

The goal extended Esposito's career-long point streak to 23 games.

Despite a 15-5 advantage in the draw circle due in large part to Fredericks' prowess, the 'Cats struggled to keep possession as they committed a season-high 24 turnovers.

Defensively, sophomore goalkeeper Mallory Weisse reached double-digit saves for the second-consecutive game with 11. Sophomore Nell Copeland had a career-high three caused turnovers and two ground balls, while classmate Claire Quinn picked up a team-high three ground balls.

After playing their last four games away from home, Chicago's Big Ten Team will return to Lanny and Sharon Martin Stadium next Saturday to take on Marquette. The opening draw is scheduled for noon.
