Wildcats Earn Record 60 Winter Academic All-Big Ten Accolades

EVANSTON, Ill. – A school-record 60 Wildcats student-athletes across five winter sports received Academic All-Big Ten honors, the Conference office announced on Wednesday. Coupled with the 99 Wildcats who received Academic All-Big Ten laurels during the fall, Northwestern has now earned 159 total honors for the year.
"Quarter after quarter, year after year, our Wildcats continue to raise the bar academically," said Vice President for Athletics & Recreation Jim Phillips. "To achieve at such a high level, both in the classroom and in competition, is a tremendous achievement. These young men and women, along with our academic support staff, deserve all the credit for refusing to compromise one for the other, and for continuing to make this University proud."
Wildcats student-athletes took home a school-record 232 Academic All-Big Ten nods in 2015-16, the group's sixth consecutive campaign exceeding 200 total honors.
Northwestern's five eligible sports for the winter season are men's and women's basketball, men's and women's swimming and diving, and wrestling. All five programs increased their Academic All-Big Ten hauls year-over-year. NU's fencing program, which will have two participants at this weekend's NCAA Championships, will be recognized during the spring at-large period.
To earn Academic All-Big Ten recognition, an athlete must be in at least his/her second year at the institution, letter in his/her sport and have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better. Sanjay Lumpkin of men's basketball earned the fourth Academic All-Big Ten recognition of his career this winter, while 11 additional Wildcats, including Olympian Jordan Wilimovsky, earned the third honors of their respective collegiate careers. They are noted below.
