EVANSTON, Ill. – Charlie Maxwell tripled and scored as six Wildcats reached base, but Northwestern was unable to take both ends of the doubleheader, falling 5-1 against the Central Michigan Chippewas.
Northwestern (5-12) recorded eight hits compared to the seven of Central Michigan (7-11), but left seven on base.
Matt Gannon started on the mound for the Wildcats, flashing electric stuff. The lanky lefty started with three innings of no-hit ball, allowing just two baserunners in those frames. He finished with three strikeouts in four innings, allowing just two hits and one run.
Maxwell got the Northwestern offense started in the third inning by drawing a walk. He then wheeled around the bases on a Jack Dunn single, coming home and pushing Northwestern to a 1-0 lead when the throw from the outfield went to second base.
After Central Michigan took a three-run lead in the sixth inning, the Wildcats threatened to claw back. Alex Erro and Joe Hoscheit each singled, but the Chippewas were able to get out of the inning unscathed.
Sam Lawrence and Cooper Wetherbee came in and locked down the final three innings. Lawrence covered the seventh and eighth, with Wetherbee manning the ninth, as each recorded a pair of strikeouts while retiring every batter they faced.
Schieber and Dickey each singled in the ninth as Northwestern looked to rally, but the Wildcats didn't score.
Northwestern finishes off the series with Central Michigan on Sunday at 1 p.m. The Wildcats will then host UIC on Tuesday, March 21st at 3:30, before starting Big Ten play with a three-game set at Miller Park against Indiana.
