EVANSTON, Ill. — Northwestern returns to the road this weekend to take on defending national champion and second-ranked North Carolina in Chapel Hill. The No. 13 Wildcats picked up a 18-10 win last week in just their second game at Lanny and Sharon Martin Stadium this season.
Northwestern has played five of its first seven game of the season at home and are on the road for two in a row starting Sunday at UNC as they will open conference play next Thursday, March 23 at Michigan on the Big Ten Network.
HAVE YOURSELF A DAY, ESPO
Fifth-year senior Christina Esposito set new career highs with six goals and seven points in the Wildcats' win over Marquette on March 11. Esposito had three goals in each half and added an assist late in the game to set the career-high mark in points. She leads the Wildcats in goals (23), points (25), shots (53), shots on goal (38), free-position goals (8) and is tied for the team lead with nine caused turnovers.
A co-captain this season, she has six multi-goal games and has tallied at least three goals five times.
DISHIN' OUT DIMES
Junior attacker Shelby Fredericks is tied with classmate Corinne Wessels for the team lead with nine assists, seven of which have come in her last two games. Fredericks had three assists at Stony Brook on March 5 before setting a new career-high with four helpers in the 'Cats' win over Marquette. Fredericks, who already ranks third in program history in draw controls, is just three assists shy of cracking the top 10 for career assists.
IN THE CIRCLE
Fredericks is averaging 7.25 draw controls per game over her last four contests, which includes nine at USC on Feb. 18 and a season-high 11 at Stony Brook on March 5. She enters the weekend ranked second in the Big Ten and 13th in the country with 5.67 draw controls per contest. The Babylon, New York, native ranks third in program history with 229 draw controls, ranking her No. 3 among active Division I players. She is also fifth among active players with 4.77 draw controls per game in 48 career games.
LAST TIME THEY MET...
Northwestern went the length of the field and Selena Lasota scored a goal with just five seconds left in regulation to send the game to overtime at Martin Stadium. Unfortunately, the Tar Heels needed just 14 seconds to score the game-winning goal in the extra session to hand the 'Cats a 9-8 defeat.
The Wildcats hold an 11-6 lead in the all-time series and are an even 3-3 in Chapel Hill.
