EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern has earned an at-large berth to the 2017 NCAA Men's Basketball Championship and will open tournament play Thursday against Vanderbilt in Salt Lake City, Utah.
The Wildcats are the No. 8 seed in the West Region while Vanderbilt is seeded No. 9.
The winner of Thursday's contest will take on the winner of the matchup between top-seeded Gonzaga and 16th-seeded South Dakota State on Saturday, March 18 with a berth in the Sweet 16 on the line.
The tournament appearance is the first in school history for Northwestern. The Wildcats have a 23-11 record this season with the win total representing a school record. NU posted a 10-8 mark in Big Ten play, good for a tie for fifth place.
Vanderbilt is led by head coach Bryce Drew and enters the NCAA tournament with a 19-15 record overall. A member of the Southeastern Conference, the Commodores finished conference play with a 10-8 mark and advanced to the semifinals of the SEC tournament. Junior guard Matthew Fisher-Davis leads the team in scoring with 13.6 points per game, while senior forward Luke Kornet is averaging 13.2 points and 6.2 rebounds per contest.
Fans interested in attending tournament games are encouraged to check the host's sites regarding ticket availability. During the tournament's preliminary rounds, the NCAA allocates just 450 seats to each participating school and the Northwestern ticket office will not have tickets for public sale.
