EVANSTON, Ill. – The Northwestern men's tennis team continues to solidify itself among the very best teams in the country.
The Wildcats are ranked seventh in the Oracle ITA rankings and eighth in the USTA poll released Wednesday. Northwestern has continued its steady climb from No. 13 to begin the year in the ITA rankings. Meanwhile, the USTA released its inaugural top-25 ranking.
Chicago's Big Ten Team reached as high as No. 7 with the ITA a season ago.
The ITA also released individual rankings for the first time since Jan. 4. Strong Kirchheimer moved up a spot to No. 25. He is 14-5 (5-1 at No. 1) so far in 2017 and has won four matches in a row. Kirchheimer has twice been denied wins over highly ranked opponents because of his match going unfinished. Against Memphis, he led No. 35 Ryan Peniston, 7-5, 4-1, when the 'Cats clinched the team match, and against Georgia Tech, Kirchheimer was up on No. 9 Christopher Eubanks 7-6 (6), 1-0, when that also went unfinished.
The Wildcats also have a doubles team appearing in the national rankings with Konrad Zieba and Sam Shropshire coming in at No. 53. The duo is off to a 7-0 start at the No. 1 spot. They have outscored the opposition 43-17 in their seven wins.
Northwestern travels to Raleigh, N.C. on Friday to take on North Carolina State at 3 p.m. CT. With a win, the Wildcats will set a program record for the best start to a season at 10-0.
