Freshman Wildcats Impress At Junior Olympics

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Five freshman Wildcats competed against the best underclassmen nationwide at the USA Junior Olympics this weekend in Kansas City, Mo., highlighted by Amy Jia's top-32 finish.
Pauline Hamilton, Adelle Berdichevsky, Amy Jia, Alexandra Banin and Abby Tartell all represented No. 8 Northwestern in individual weapon competitions against deep fields of over 150 entrants per weapon. Hamilton paced the 'Cats with six pool wins while Jia recorded an impressive three victories in her direct elimination bouts.
On Saturday, Hamilton opened the epee competition with a perfect 6-0 record in her pool and was seeded third heading into the knockout stage. With a bye in the first round, she won her second round matchup 12-11 before falling in the round of 64, 15-7. She ended the competition in 33rd place.
Berdichevsky started epee with a 4-2 record in her pool en route to a No. 44 seed in the knockout round. After a bye in the first, Berdichevsky ultimately lost a narrow 14-13 bout in the round of 128 and finished 75th in the field of over 200.
On Sunday in the foil competition, Amy Jia posted a 3-3 record in the pool stage and was ranked 100th before direct elimination. Jia built up some momentum, winning her first round bout and upsetting the 29th seed in the second round, 15-4. Jia rolled through the round of 64 before her run finally stalled in the round of 32 against the fourth ranked seed in a 15-7 defeat. Jia finished 32nd out of a field of 212.
Banin also finished 3-3 in her pool bouts in foil and was seeded 101st. She won her first knockout round match 15-4, before earning a 15-13 upset against the 28th seed in the second round. She came close to advancing past the round of 64 but fell 14-13 and finished in 61st place.
In sabre, Tartell got off to a 4-2 start in the pool stage, earning her a first round bye in the main bracket. In the second round, she dropped a close 15-12 decision and finished the event in 78th.
The Wildcats are back in action next weekend as a team as they enter the postseason and look to claim a back-to-back title at the Midwest Fencing Conference Championships in Columbus, Ohio.
