Wildcats Have No Answer for No. 3 Seminoles Saturday, 7-0

2/18/2017 2:34:00 PM | Softball

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- One day after taking No. 3 Florida State to the bottom of the seventh in the opening game of the Big Ten/ACC Challenge, Northwestern had no answer for Seminoles ace Jessica Burroughs in a 7-0 defeat on Saturday.

Florida State now is a perfect 8-0 on the season with its victory, while Northwestern is 1-6 following the loss.

Northwestern returns to action today at 5:30 p.m. CT/6:30 p.m. ET taking on No. 24 Pittsburgh. The Panthers are 7-0 on the season after sweeping Nebraska in the other half of the Tallahassee Challenge schedule by scores of 9-1 (5) and 6-2.

Playing as the visiting team in the second game between the squads in this tournament, Florida State put a run on the board right away against Northwestern starter Morgan Newport. The leadoff batter singled on the infield, stole second, was moved to third via a groundout then scored on a sacrifice fly.

In the top of the third, back-to-back one-out doubles put Seminoles on second and third with one out. Newport got a comebacker that she deftly flipped to Sammy Nettling behind the plate, and the junior corralled the ball to put a tag on the lead runner. The batter took advantage of the play at the plate to race toward second, and Nettling's throw there was not in time. That allowed the runner who had been on second to come around and score, putting FSU's lead at 2-0.

The Seminoles put together their first true extended rally of the game in the top of the fourth, pushing two runs across and getting runners to second and third with two outs. At that point, Kenzie Ellis entered the circle in relief of Newport. Though she walked one batter to load the bases, Ellis stranded them all with a flyout to Krista Williams in center.

Sabrina Rabin led off Northwestern's half of the fourth with an infield single, marking NU's first hit and base runner of the day. Burroughs kept the Wildcats from getting into scoring position in the inning, however.

Kaley Winegarner took over in the circle to start the top of the sixth and walked the first two batters she saw. Newport then re-entered to pitch for NU. The next Seminole bunted toward first, but nobody covered the bag and the throw rolled all the way to the track in right field. Two runs came in on that play followed by a sacrifice fly to give Florida State a commanding 7-0 lead.

FSU inserted freshman Cassidy Davis into the circle in relief of its ace to start the bottom of the sixth. Williams beat out an infield single against her, then stole second with two outs to give Northwestern its first runner in scoring position in the game. Marissa Panko then laced a ball, but it was right at the third baseman, who squeezed it for the final out of the inning.

Newport completed her second stint in the game in stellar fashion with a five-pitch 1-2-3 top of the seventh. Northwestern was unable to get anything going in its final chance in the bottom half.

Newport (0-1) took the loss in her first-career start, going 5.2 innings. She allowed five runs (four earned) on eight hits and one walk with a strikeout. Ellis tossed 1.1 frames of relief, giving up no runs or hits while walking two. Winegarner was charged with two runs for her two walks given up.
