Northwestern Hosts Second Annual Performance Summit

2/17/2017 9:32:00 AM | Football, General

EVANSTON, Illinois – Northwestern hosted the second annual Performance Summit on Saturday, February 11. The forum welcomed more than 60 attendees from a variety of professional backgrounds, including certified athletic trainers, physicians, performance specialists, physical therapists and athletic training students. The group came to Evanston from throughout Chicagoland and the Big Ten Conference.

"The Northwestern Performance Summit was created to provide the Chicagoland community with a high-quality continuing education event that showcases the talents and expertise of the staff here at NU," said Wildcats associate athletic director and head athletic trainer Tory Lindley. "It is a collaboration between our sports medicine and sports performance departments that extends our daily commitment to maximizing athletic and academic performance while prioritizing the individual health and well-being of each student athlete."

Speakers included Northwestern head team physician Dr. Jeffrey Mjaanes on treatment of acute soft tissue injuries, Wildcats performance nutritionist Christina Weidman on nutrition for optimal post-injury healing, and Dr. Micah Eimer on the functional anatomy of the heart and the implications of training with hypertension. Lindley addressed the group about managing compassion fatigue among sports medicine clinicians.

"What makes the Northwestern Performance Summit unique," Lindley continued, "is that it is designed to deliver expert educational content that impacts the practitioner who is motivated in the areas of injury prevention, performance enhancement and safe return to play following injury."

The keynote speaker for the event was Dr Charlie Weingroff a physical therapist, a certified athletic trainer, and a certified strength and conditioning specialist who has served as head strength & conditioning coach and assistant athletic trainer for the Philadelphia 76ers, head strength & conditioning coach for the Canadian Men's National Basketball Team, and director of physical performance and resiliency and lead physical therapist for the United States Marines Corps Special Operations Command in Camp Lejeune, N.C.

For Weingroff, the impact of blending these professions in one development forum is, "to demonstrate that there is a system that allows everyone to work together instead of working separately, showing that there are common attack points for the skills that everyone values to serve athletes."

Jeff G., a participant from North Park University, explained, "I really wanted to get different points of views on different methods of recovery and training, I want to learn different techniques on how to be a better clinician."

Joe G., a two-time summit attendee, said the continuing education, "helps you reevaluate what you're doing every day, and see where you're missing things."

For all of the attendees, Lindley hopes that, "they understand how impactful the collaboration between sports medicine, sports nutrition and strength and conditioning can be on the student athlete experience and well as their ability to maximize their performance potential."
