
Day Two: Wildcats Continue to Shine at Big Ten Championships

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The Northwestern women's swimming and diving program moved up to sixth in the team standings of the 2017 Big Ten Championships thanks to standout performances in Thursday night's final inside the Boilermaker Aquatic Center.
The Wildcats have 230 team points through the first two days of competition, leading seventh-place Purdue by seven points and eighth-place Penn State by 56.

Sophomore Olivia Rosendahl set the standard for the Wildcats Thursday night, using another late audible to her final dive of the competition to cap off a career-best score of 345.55 to claim second place in the 1-meter competition. The silver medal matches her best finish at the Big Ten Championships as she claimed second in the platform last season.

After breaking her own school record earlier in the day in the 200 individual medley, senior Melissa Postoll improved on her performance to finish fifth in the finals with a 1:58.23. Postoll has broke the 200 IM Northwestern record at each of the last two Big Ten Championships.

Junior Mary Warren posted her second personal best of the day in the 50 free, touching the wall in 22.29 to finish third and grab the 'Cats 27 team points. Senior Annika Winsnes also picked up points in the 50 free consolation final, finishing 11th overall with a personal-best time of 22.71.

Warren's time set the fourth-best standard in program history, while Winsnes' time ranks sixth on NU's Top-10 performers list.
Freshman Valerie Gruest Slowing capped off her first career finals appearance with an eighth-place finish in the 500 free. The youngest competitor in the 500 free final, Gruest Slowing was unable to improve on her school record 4:40.23 she set in the prelims, finishing the finals in 4:43.26 to earn 22 team points.
The Wildcats 400 medley relay team of Lacey Locke, Peyton Greenberg, Gruest Slowing and Annika Winsnes capped the night with a season-best 3:40.41 to finish 11th and grab 32 more team points.
The 2017 Big Ten Championships will continue Friday at 10 a.m. CT with prelims in the 100 fly, 400 individual medley, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back and 3-meter dive.

Tonight's final will also feature the 400 medley relay.

Gruest Slowing was the first Wildcat to qualify when she broke her own school record in the 500 free to earn the eighth seed in Thursday night's final. Not to be outdone, Postoll also broke her own school record in the 200 IM with a time of 1:58.54 to earn the sixth seed.

The Wildcats qualified two for tonight's 50 free final as Warren set a personal best and notched the fourth best performance on the NU Top-10 performers list with a 22.46 to earn the seventh seed. Winsnes will swim in the consolation final as she swam a season-best 22.83 to tie for 15th in the prelims.
Freshman Malorie Han, Anna Keane, Katherine Seneman and Jackie Doyle all swam season bests in the event, while Lacey Smith and Lindsay Adamski recorded personal bests.

In addition to Postoll's record-break performance in the 200 IM, senior Lacey Locke and freshman Sandra Freeman posted season bests in the 200 IM with times of 2:01.87 and 2:04.33, respectively.

Rosendahl qualified for the finals with a dramatic finish, pulling a last-minute change to her final dive. Entering the final dive just on the outside of the top eight, Rosendahl nailed her final dive to score a 58.50 and jump up to fifth heading into the finals. Sophomore Eryn Scannell just missed out on scoring points for the 'Cats, finishing 28th with a score of 245.50.
