EVANSTON, Ill. — The Northwestern women's swimming and diving team will look to make noise at the 2017 Big Ten Championships this Wednesday through Saturday (Feb. 15-18) at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center in West Lafayette, Indiana.
Led by second-year head coach Abby Steketee, the Wildcats are looking to improve on their eighth-place finish at the Big Ten Championships a year ago. Individually, Wildcats will look to improve their times in hopes of qualifying for the NCAA Championships March 15-19 in Indianapolis, Indiana.
The meet will begin Wednesday evening with the 200 medley and 800 freestyle relays before full days of competition start Thursday morning. A complete schedule of events is below.
The Wildcats feature a pair of relay teams that are seeded in the top six in the 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle squads.
Freshman Valerie Gruest Slowing highlights the Wildcats' individual seeds heading into the week. She is seeded seventh in both the 500 free and 1,650 free and is 17th in the 200 fly. Gruest Slowing has picked up four wins in the 500 free this season and a pair each in the 1,650 free and 200 fly. She set the school record in the mile earlier this year at the TYR Invitational and already has NCAA 'B' cuts in all three events.
Sophomore Olivia Rosendahl, a two-time Big Ten Diver of the Week in 2016-17, will lead a group of NU divers in the 1-meter, 3-meter and Platform competitions. Rosendahl reached the championship final in all three events last year. She captured a silver medal in the platform, finished fourth in the 3-meter and garnered an eighth-place finish in the 1-meter dive.
Senior Melissa Postoll is in line to score in three events as she is seeded seventh in the 200 individual medley, 12th in the 400 IM and 13th in the 200 backstroke. Postoll posted season-best times in all three events at the Big Ten Championships last season.
Senior Ellen Stello is also seeded in the top-24 in three events, ranking 16th in the 200 fly, 17th in the 400 IM and 24th in the 500 free. She hit NCAA 'B' cuts in all three events earlier in the season.
The 'Cats feature two more competitors ranked in the top eight in their respective events. Senior Annika Winsnes is seeded seventh in the 100 free and sophomore Peyton Greenberg is eighth in the 200 breaststroke.
Now in its second year at the Big Ten Championships is a revised-scoring format in which qualifiers in the bonus finals of the swimming events will account for team points. Divers that finish 17th through 24th place in the preliminary rounds will also account for team points. Only A & B finals (championship and consolation) will be contested in the diving events.
A Final Scoring: 32-28-27-26-25-24-23-22
B Final Scoring: 20-17-16-15-14-13-12-11
C Final Scoring: 9-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 (Plus 17-24 in Diving Prelims)
Relay Scoring: 64-56-54-52-50-48-46-44-40-34-32-30-28
All seven sessions will air live on BTN Plus on BTN2Go. The Big Ten Network will air a condensed version of the meet on Sunday (Feb. 19) at 10:30 a.m. ET. Bernie Guenther (play-by-play), former Indiana swimmer Margaux Farrell (swimming color), former Minnesota men's diver Manny Pollard (diving color) and Gabriella DiGiovanni (reporter) will be on the call. The first six sessions will be streamed online via BTN Plus, while the seventh and final session will be shown live on BTN2Go.
