BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Northwestern began its six-day, three-game road trip with a tough loss at Indiana in a game featuring two of the top five teams in the Big Ten standings.
The Wildcats (17-7, 6-5) were unable to overcome a slow start, falling 66-38 on the road in Indiana's annual Pink Game.
Northwestern played tremendous defense for much of the game, limiting the Hoosiers to just 39 percent from the field. But the 'Cats were held to 32 percent themselves and made just one three-pointer compared to six for Indiana. The Hoosiers grabbed 18 offensive rebounds and scored 19 second chance points compared to nine and six for NU.
Nia Coffey led the way for the Wildcats with nine points and nine rebounds, and Amber Jamison added nine points of her own. Nine players scored in all for Northwestern.
Defense ruled the day in the first half with neither team clearing 30 percent shooting from the field. The Hoosiers held a 16-6 lead after the first quarter and that was trimmed to nine, 26-17, at the half. Jamison led the way for the Wildcats in the first 20 minutes with five points, all of which came in the closing minutes to keep the deficit to single digits.
Indiana outscored the 'Cats 24-11 in the third quarter and 18-8 in the fourth to grow its lead out to the final margin.
Chicago's Big Ten Team has a quick turnaround when it heads to Minneapolis, Minn. on Monday to take on Minnesota at Williams Arena. Tip is set for 6 p.m.
