HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. — The 55th Annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championships kicks off Friday morning at Sears Centre Arena and Northwestern seeks to improve upon placing four in last year's edition.
 
The entire first day will feature 10 mats' worth of competition, with Session I starting at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 29, and Session II set for 7 p.m. later that night.
 
Session III begins at noon on Saturday, Dec. 30, featuring four mats and including semifinals, consolation matches, and the 7th place bouts.
 
The final session will start at 7 p.m. on Saturday night, with opening ceremonies at 6:30 p.m. The 1st, 3rd, and 5th place matches will take place on three mats at the Sears Centre Arena. The awards ceremony is set to conclude around 9:15 p.m.
 
WATCH ME, WATCH ME
For the first time, FloWrestling will be live-streaming all the Midlands action. It will also be simulcast on BTN Plus via BTN2Go.
 
PRIOR RETURNS
Last year, Sebastian Rivera (125 lbs.), Ryan Deakin (149 lbs.), Jacob Berkowitz (197 lbs.), and Conan Jennings (285 lbs.) placed for the Wildcats in the prestigious mid-year tournament. Rivera and Deakin, both wrestling as unattached first-years in 2016, finished in fourth place and third place, respectively.
 
Berkowitz, who graduated after last season, and Jennings, who is a redshirt junior, both finished in eighth place.
 
RANKED WRESTLERS
Three 'Cats — Rivera, Deakin, and Jennings, find themselves entrenched in the most recent Intermat poll. Rivera, who owns an undefeated, 10-0 mark, is ranked 12th in the nation, while Deakin is 9th overall. Jennings is ranked 19th.
 
As a team, Northwestern is ranked 24th overall by The Open Mat and tied for 23rd by W.I.N. Magazine.

CHANGE OF SCENERY
The 55th Annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championships are being held at the Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, due to a $110-million renovation of Welsh-Ryan Arena.
